The Basic Rules

You are dealt two cards face up. The dealer gets two cards — one face up, one face down (in most variants). The goal is to finish with a hand total closer to 21 than the dealer's without going over. Aces count as 1 or 11 (your choice), face cards count as 10, number cards count as their face value. A two-card 21 (an ace plus a ten-value card) is a "blackjack" and usually pays 3:2 on your stake — a 50 per cent premium.
